  • An Old Fashioned Girl is a novel by Louisa May Alcott. It was first serialised in the Merry's Museum magazine between July and August in 1869 and consisted of only six chapters. For the finished product, however, Alcott continued the story from the chapter "Six Years Afterwards" and so it ended up with nineteen chapters in all. The book revolves around Polly Milton, the old-fashioned girl who titles the story. Polly visits her wealthy friend Fanny Shaw in the city and is overwhelmed by the fashionable and urban life they live––but also left out because of her "countrified" manners and outdated clothes.

The cover of this edition shows a shadowy silhouette on a black background, hard to really see online. When the book arrived, I realized the silhouette was of a bearded man, with his chest hair showing at the v neck. This cover in no way relates to the charming story of a country girl who visits a wealthy friend in the city!

I requested a return and was given an immediate refund and was told not to send the book back, so an A+ for excellent customer service! I'm giving 4 stars because the story itself is wonderful and the full refund was rapid. Just that (shudder) serial killer cover photo.

An Old Fashioned Girl By Louisa May Alcott Illustrated Comes with a Free Audiobook edition by Louisa May Alcott Vincent Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book is amazing for people who like an old-fashioned story about modesty, manners, making money, trying to succeed, friendship, love and growing up. The characters are likeable but not without flaws, which makes them so interesting to read about. The plot is great but intense, with lots of chapters and lots of new events plus a little suspense. I love the writing but it can be hard to understand all the implied facts where one must read between the lines. But I loved this book so much and I strongly recommend it!
I've always liked this book much better than Little Women and now reading it again several decades after the first time, find I enjoy it just as much all these years later. Amazing to see that even 150 years ago little girls were growing up too quickly and that there were dysfunctional families. Although the prose of the book is dated, it is well worth the effort to read it. Not only is it an interesting time travel back to just after the Civil War but you see the problems of today are the same problems families have always dealt with. This is a book about a little girl being true to herself, something we should all strive for.
I have LOVED this story for years. But, THIS edition, while it might be fine if you're reading this for a class or don't plan to keep the book, is not one you will want for your personal collection. I couldn't tell what the picture on the front cover was, but it's the profile of a modern looking man. A man. On the cover of An Old Fashioned Girl. And it calls itself "illustrated." It hasn't been illustrated. Someone threw in random prints from the public domain from various eras. Who knows if they even make any sense with the text. I will be returning this and hoping to find a nicer copy somewhere.
This was a real gem that I had never read before. As its title implies, it is from an era that many would consider "old-fashioned" but whose morals are not. As someone who appreciates hard work, honesty and consideration of others as virtues that continue valuable today, I thoroughly enjoyed the world that Louisa created. Our main character, Polly, is an excellent model for others to imitate, as she considers the feelings of others, and isn't content to remain the same. She grows - expects to grow and accomplishes it - through her own determined efforts. Shouldn't we all want to improve ourselves as human beings, year by year? Oh, and we get a happy-ever-after of a more realistic sort than most with a sweet romance (completely clean, how refreshing!) Enjoyable for all, but especially great for young girls or teens.
Notes The version I read (Dec 2017) hadn't adjusted for original typesetting (contractions were annoyingly separated, as in "has n't". While distracting, the story was worth the effort. However, if you consider any kind of morality in books to be preachy, you won't enjoy it. Push yourself ;)
NOTE My review has nothing to do with the actual story of this book (I've read An Old Fashioned Girl before and it is one of my favorite classics). Highly recommend the actual story, but this book print is GARBAGE!

This printed copy is obviously a knock-off and incredibly suspicious.
    1) The front cover of the book has a picture of the outline of a weird man with a hairy chest.
    2) The back cover contains a plot summary that is WORD-FOR-WORD the exact first paragraph from the Wikipedia entry (I looked it up)! Oh and get this, the author summary in the front of the book is also an exact copy/paste from Louisa May Alcott's Wikipedia page.
    3) The book does not contain the correct number of chapters (the text may all be there, but the chapters are incorrectly labeled). The table of contents in incorrect and has wrong page numbers listed.
    4) There are super strange pictures randomly inserted throughout the book that have NOTHING to do with the story (we're talking dragons, angels, fairies, etc.). These appear to be random public domain photos thrown onto the pages.
    5) The copyright is clearly a generic statement.
    6) Here is an exact copy of the only publishing data to be found
"Made in the USA. Lexington KY. 26 December 2017."

*I purchased the book on December 26th, 2017.....

In summary, BUY A BETTER PRINT OF THIS BOOK. This copy is as sketchy as it gets.
I only wish I had read it earlier in my life. I am twenty-three and am trying to be quite the little lady, though I have made so very many foolish mistakes. I feel wiser after having read this book and feel that it might have prevented some past follies by inspiring me to Christian and feminine greatness. I will carry its lessons in my heart, and share its lessons with the world if not by word then at least by action. May I inspire the world as Polly has inspired me!
Its just the word to describe the book. When I read Louisa's works, I suddenly seem to believe in the great influence a book can have over a person. This book is no exception. All things that people like me think a weakness, she points out that they can be the greatest strengths. If we could truly grasp her thoughts, life will be all the more beautiful. Coming to this particular book, it made me want to be an "old fashioned girl" more than I ever was. the strength of the main character, Polly influences us so and many other such good characters in the book for instance the grandma and Mr.Shaw add a lot more. I had tears more than once while reading the book and just couldn't put it down once I started. A must read for anyone and girls/women in particular who would want to improve themselves.
    Thank you,Louisa May Alcott!!
